Didn't spot this until today, Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software movement, will be speaking at the University of Sheffield on the 5th of March. Here's a synopsis:
[quote:3f29806f44]
Copyright developed in the age of the printing press and was designed to fit with the system of centralized copying imposed by this technology. But, the copyright system does not fit well with computer networks, and only Draconian punishments can enforce it. The global corporations that profit from copyright are lobbying for Draconian punishments, and to increase their copyright powers, while suppressing public access to technology. But if we seriously hope to serve the only legitimate purpose of copyright, to promote progress for the benefit of the public, then we must make changes in the other direction.
Richard Stallman launched the development of the GNU operating system (see www.gnu.org) in 1984. GNU is free software - everyone has the freedom to copy it and redistribute it, as well as to make changes, either large or small. The GNU/Linux system, basically the GNU operating system with Linux added, is used on tens of millions of computers today.

Seems it's his recent lecture on copyright, rather than a general Free Software one (as was the case when we went to see him in Manchester a couple of years ago). I's being organised by the British Computer Society and the University's EEE (Electronic and Electrical Engineering) Society.
Note that, even though it's free, you'll need to pre-book to attend. You can do so from the page I've linked to above (not the Wikipedia one
). I'm booked, and now I'm going to fire off an email to the EEE Soc

With a linux distribution.
Ahahahahahhahahahahahahahaha
D'oh! Security through obscurity only works if you don't give out access to the source, especially when you *know* it's full of holes and is being used in production all over the world ![]()
